Lake Chelan Winery

Lake Chelan Winery

When Martin Luther King exclaims, “Beer is made by men, wine by God”, we better not argue with it! A visit to a Lake Chelan Winery will show you how true this statement is!

Lake Chelan is one of the newest wine growing regions in the state of Washington. It was listed as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2009. Although its status as an AVA is relatively recent, there are more than 20 wineries right now, you can be assured that each and every Lake Chelan winery is world class in its own right.

Enjoying a wine tasting experience in a Lake Chelan winery is an unforgettable experience with the heady mix of the delectable wines and the picturesque views of the lake outside.

Every Lake Chelan Winery takes advantage of the lake, not just for its scenic and panoramic views, but also for the favorable climatic conditions that the lake provides for growing grapes. It moderates the temperatures of the surrounding area just like a river as it is similar to a fjord. The temperature of the lake affects the temperature of the air which significantly influences the climate of the viticultural areas.

Another advantage that every Lake Chelan winery has is the soil that has volcanic ash and pumice than any other AVA in the state of Washington. Being in the Northern Cascade Mountain’s rain shadow is also advantageous to every Lake Chelan winery.

Lake Chelan has a significant feather in its cap, having been listed as one of the most pristine waters in North America. The east end of the lake has rolling hills that give way to panoramic views as it goes further up, since the lake lies in a gorge that is actually deeper than the Grand Canyon. There are snowcapped peaks that rise 7000 feet from the shore of the lake. The mountainside is dotted with luscious evergreen trees.

The earliest Lake Chelan Winery had plantings of only a few types of grapes, mostly Pinot noir, Chardonnay, and Concord. This has now grown to include a wider variety of grapes, from Malbec, Pinot Gris, Syrah, and Riesling to Gewürztraminer. Previously a region where apples were grown, the same conditions that were so favorable to apples are now favorable for growing wine grapes that are world class in quality.

There are many wine-tasting events that are held annually in the Lake Chelan AVA that can give you an intoxicating taste of the wines that are created here, from red wines and white wines to dry and sweet wines. You can get Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Pinot Noir to among red wines to Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Rose and Chardonnay among the white wines.

The five annual events held at this AVA are the Fall Barrel Tasting, Red Wine and Chocolate, Spring Barrel Tasting, Lake Chelan Crush, and the Chelan Nouveau.

With 260 planted acres out of the 24,000 acres providing grapes for the wineries in Lake Chelan, there is opportunity and space for more wineries and vineyards here.
