Assistant Winemaker


Cougar Crest is a family owned winery with 75 acres of vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. Case production averages 12,000 cases.We have a well equipped, modern wine making facility with room to grow. We encourage our staff to express their opinions by bringing their knowledge and skills from previous experience to solve problems and create solutions. This is a small business where the successful candidate enjoys being a jack of all trades at times, and enjoys the variety of tasks that need to be done.We have our own bottling line so some bottling experience is a plus. We are looking for a working winemaker with experience in all phases of winemaking, enology, sanitation, crush,and record keeping. Vineyard experience is also desirable, including accurately sampling the vineyard during crush. A working knowledge of winery equipment and maintenance is necessary. Applicant must be a self-starter and able to work independently, with strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work schedule. When the Winemaker is not in the cellar this person manages the entire cellar operations. Interpersonal skills must include a cooperative, not confrontational, attitude while maintaining the ability to supervise the work of others. Must also be able to work with managers and owners who are involved in the daily operation of production and administration. Sensory evaluation of wines for faults as well as for blending trials a must. This position will also involve occasional work with the public and the trade, representing the winery at tasting and trade events, as well as staffing on Spring Release Weekend and Holiday Barrel tasting weekends. Also, staffing wine club events at the winery. During slow times in production, the production staff will assist others in the winery with general maintenance and wine club shipments as needed. Forklift skills, including stacking 2-barrel racks a must. Computer skills to include Outlook, Word, and Excel, as well as production software. This is a very physical job requiring the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, lift/or move empty 60 gallon oak wine barrels, stand for long periods during bottling and crush, work outdoors in all types of weather during crush, lift 3 inch hoses full of must, and be available during crush for long days. (Can you still remember why you want to do this?) Formal training in winemaking and at least 3 years in a similar position required. Must have own transportation and be able to work non-traditional hours for crush and special events. Salary commensurate with experience.
