At Windsor Oaks, we take pride in producing ultra-premium wines from our estate vineyards located within three of California's most famous wine appellations; Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Chalk Hill. Located in Sonoma County, overlooking the Russian River Valley, our 710 acre estate boasts many diverse micro climates, including rare soil and slope combinations. Our ultra-premium grapes benefit from the diverse characteristics of these distinct climates and terroirs. Approximately 350 acres are dedicated to "Forever Wild Open Space", while the remaining 250 acres are planted with eighteen different varieties of premium wine grapes. The result is a long-standing tradition of growing twelve types of ultra-premium wine grapes for a number of top-tier wineries that produce highly awarded wines.

Margaret Davenport, Winemaker:
2014 will mark Margaret’s 35th crush. She’s only been with Windsor Oaks since 2011, but her wine already speaks for itself. A lab apprenticeship in 1980 began a long, critically-acclaimed winemaking history, and her expertise is an incredible boon to our operation. Outspoken and fun, Margaret lives with her partner and daughter in the beautiful Rockpile AVA above Lake Sonoma.
Sabrina Prati, Assistant Winemaker

Sabrina Prati, Assistant Winemaker:
Coming from a long line of Alexander Valley growers and winemakers, one of Sabrina’s first memories is riding a vineyard tractor with her father. Grapes are in her blood. Now, with a BS in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis, she has honed her skills both in the area and internationally. 2013 was her eighth harvest and she’s looking forward to many, many more.


Foundational to the vision of Windsor Oaks is the protection and preservation of all 710 acres of the estate. Owners Bob and Renee Stein reinforced their dedication to that vision in 1998 when they made an agreement with the Sonoma County Open Space District to leave 350 acres of the property untouched. For them, that decision came at the expense of choosing to not develop several luxury home sights, instead preserving the natural habitat for an immensity of plant and animal wildlife. Designated ‘Forever Wild,’ the land is protected in perpetuity.

With over 200 acres of vineyards dominating much of the rest of the estate, conscious viticultural practices are a must. 2014 marks the first year our vineyards will be Certified Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Having already employed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices throughout the vineyards, we hope this process will afford us the opportunity to build on a pre-existing program of environmentally-friendly growing. The certification, based around a comprehensive audit of the estate, mandates annual assessments and continual improvement to maintain the privilege of accreditation.

Categories in the Certification assessment include vineyard health, habitat conservation, water use, resource management, continuing education, philanthropic endeavors and several others.

The Team

Douglas Lumgair, Estate General Manager:
Almost 25 years ago Doug laid the infrastructure that keeps the Estate functioning to this day. From the day Mr Stein pruchased the property, Doug's vision for Windsor Oaks was key in getting everything started and today he is the essential element that keeps it all running. In his time off he enjoys hiking on the estate and flying his plane with his true love, Julie Hagler Lumgair.

Laura Deyermond, Viticulturist and PCA
Laura Deyermond, Viticulturist and PCA: With a Masters from Washington State University and 8 years of experience in both organic and sustainable vineyards around the country, Laura’s determined to make Windsor Oaks the premier grape-producing estate in Sonoma County. Through her efforts our vineyards are now Certified Sustainable, and our local blue birds are enjoying their new redwood accommodations.
Ralph Hoag, Manager of Grape and Bulk Wine Sales: Ralph Hoag, Manager of Grape and Bulk Wine Sales: Ralph was determined to learn the wine industry from the ground up by schooling and working in the vineyards and cellars of California’s North Coast. Based on his skill, integrity and dedication, Ralph stepped into his current role after being hired as an intern in 2011. Quiet and hardworking while in the office, he'll happily talk grapes and wine with you any time.

Guadalupe Ruiz, Vineyard Foreman
Guadalupe Ruiz, Vineyard Foreman: After living on the Estate and working in the vineyards for over 30 years, Lupe knows this place better than anyone. Season by season he guides his crew in the cultivation of some of the County’s highest quality grapes. He leads by example and there’s no one we’ve seen who can match his speed, efficiency and precision in the vineyard. Lupe lives on the property with his wife and several cats.

Armando Alvarez, Estate Construction and Maintenance Foreman
Armando Alvarez, Estate Construction and Maintenance Foreman: Throw anything at Armando and he’ll tackle it head on. You can’t keep this guy down. Always joking as he gets the job done, Armando keeps a low profile, but this place couldn’t function without him. From equipment maintenance to general Estate improvements, he does it all.

John Calmeyer, Winery General Manager:
A talented cover-band bassist and all around good guy, John also happens to be a marketing guru and manages our winery operations. His decades of industry experience lend tried and true insights to our little company, and the winery’s continuing expansion and brand exposure is due in large part to his expertise.

Tom Schmidt, Enologist: A Sonoma County native, Tom’s been immersed in the wine industry since birth. Growing up on his family’s vineyard, enology was a natural course to follow. But he didn’t limit himself to what he could learn here; Tom has worked in New Zealand and Australia, as well as with Malbec in Argentina. And, if you ever have a chance, give his home brew a try. You won’t be disappointed.
Antonio Garcia, Cellar Hand Antonio Garcia, Cellar Hand: Windsor Oaks is a bit of a family business for Antonio. Both his father and uncle have worked in the vineyards here, but he was the first to step into the cellar. A new father himself, Antonio looks a bit bleary-eyed these days, though he’s as hard a worker as ever, and knows his way around a winery better than most.

Elizabeth McDermott, Wine Club Manager
Elizabeth McDermott, Direct Sales Manager: With over 18 years of wine industry experience, Liz brings her skills in marketing, customer relations and wine sales to the growing programs at Windsor Oaks. With a love for people and a desire to create unique and memorable experiences, she’s in the perfect role. Liz holds a BA in Fine Art, is a certified Yoga teacher and loves to spend time outdoors and with her family.
Lynn Bond, Hospitality Coordinator

Lynn Bond, Hospitality Coordinator:
Always ready with a genuine smile, kind word and inventive idea, Lynn makes Windsor Oaks a special place for anyone lucky enough to run into her. Having worked the majority of her life in the hospitality industry, welcoming people is Lynn’s gift. In addition to her passion for food and wine, she also loves photography, graphic design and restoration.
Trish Moyer, Bookkeeper

Trish Moyer, Bookkeeper:
From some seriously complicated accounting to coordinating wholesale orders, Trish stays very busy. Lucky for everyone, though, she’s very organized and does a great job staying on top of it all. A proud mother, Trish knows her biggest accomplishment is raising her sons Josh and Ryan to be the wonderful, kind and amazing young men that they are.
