Winemaker

Karyl, Owner & Winemaker, graduated from the U.C. Davis Winemaker’s Certificate Program. It was a tough program, she'll admit, but has learned one important thing: people each enjoy different aspects of wine, and regardless of how much experience or science goes into the wine bottle, the bottom line is still…”Do you like it?”

History

Kevin and Karyl, the owners of Wilhelm Family Vineyards, planted their first Syrah and Tempranillo vines in July of 2005. Those vines are now mature, producing quality wine grapes. The second year, five more varietals were planted, and the Wilhelm Family Vineyards hasn’t slowed since. The winery is now home to a Wine Enthusiast Club and a Winemaker’s Club, as the Wilhelms encourage those around the Elgin, Arizona area to indulge in their love for wine.

Practices & Techniques

We originally planted many varietals that did not fit the micro climate that exists on our plot of land. Although it has a nice southerly facing slope, we thought the cold air drainage would be adequate with the falling eastern terrain. After several years of data points, we identified the need to change some of our varietals to cope with the late spring frosts and early fall frosts.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The vineyards cover twenty acres and has unobstructed mountain views. There are plans to add three more acres of vines in the near future, but you can visit the winery and enjoy the amazing setting and learn something about the varietals that the Wilhelms are growing.
