Winemaker

Pierre Seillan first began working with Cabernet Franc and Merlot more than four decades ago at his family's estate in Armagnac, and then later moved on to Château de Targé in the Saumur-Champigny AOC of the Loire Valley. Though Pierre enjoyed the Loire, Bordeaux beckoned, and he spent two decades as technical director and winemaker for seven Bordeaux châteaux in Lalande de Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, St. Estèphe, Haut-Médoc, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur.

Pierre met Jess Jackson in the mid-1990s and soon accepted his invitation to come to Sonoma County to make world-class wine. Inspired by the region's exceptional terroir, Pierre crafts Vérité’s wines as pure Sonoma expressions of traditional Bordeaux varieties

History

"When my wife and I moved to Sonoma in 1998, we knew we had come home. Here was a place we could craft pure, mountain vineyard expressions - wines that would reflect the regin's diverse micro-crus with integrity." - Pierre Seillan

Practices & Techniques

The diversity of Sonoma County is mirrored in our estate vineyards, where soils, aspects, and microclimates in our mountain and hillside vineyards vary dramatically from block to block, creating what we like to think of as small vineyards within vineyards, our palette of soil types. Each is distinct from the others, so we call these special places micro-crus. They are the heart and soul of our terroir philosophy at Vérité. Everything we do here — from the vineyard to the bottle — we do with the goal of allowing these micro-crus to transmit the message, or truth, of our soil in Sonoma County. The truth is in our soil; it flows through the vines and speaks clearly in our wines.

To create a work of art is one thing; to create a masterpiece is entirely another. Creating a masterpiece requires an intense intimacy and a unique perspective throughout the entire process. This is why we refer to Pierre as vigneron rather than winemaker – because vigneron encompasses not only decisions made in the cellar, but also those made in the vineyard throughout the year, where the true character of our wine originates.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The Alexander Valley appellation ranges between 900 and 2,400 feet above sea level, an elevation that provides an abundance of soils, sun aspects and climates. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in rocky, red volcanic soil that forces the vines to struggle and to develop deep root systems. These deep root systems channel valuable nutrients to the grapes and create fruit teeming with power, spice, and complexity.

Bennett Valley is cooled by the nearby Pacific Ocean and experiences wide swings between daytime and nighttime temperatures: warm days ensure the development of vibrant varietal character in our fruit, while cool nights maintain balanced acidity. Our vineyards here lie between 550 and 629 feet elevation on northwest-facing foothills in well-draining, sandy loam soil — ideal for Merlot.

The Knights Valley region is known for warm afternoons that give way to cool evenings. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot thrive on southwest-facing slopes that boast well-draining, gravelly volcanic soil — optimal conditions for developing fruit with outstanding varietal concentration and complexity. Elevation ranges between 500 and 960 feet above sea level.

The Chalk Hill appellation is named for the chalky soil that adds a memorable touch of minerality to wines produced here. The vineyards benefit from cool mornings and warm sunny afternoons moderated by breezy coastal winds. Our Merlot blocks face northwest, Cabernet Franc east and Petit Verdot south; the sun and wind orientations optimize the expression of each variety and its many micro-crus. Elevation ranges from 160 to 225 feet above sea level.
