Winemaker

In 1981, Dan Barwick, a native of England, took his first wine job in the wine department of Harrods in London. "That's where a wine germ settled and stayed in my head until I was ready to discover more," says Barwick. After a short stint in wholesale wine sales, Barwick hopscotched around the wine world for nine years, first a Matanzas Creek Winery in Sonoma's Bennett Valley, then Ferrai-Carano, over a Burgundy and then Stellenbosch and the Barossa Valley, before coming back to Sonoma County and Martin Ray Winery, and finally Paradise Ridge where he started working with Trecini. Since 1999, Dan has made thirteen consecutive vintages of Trecini and looks forward to introducing new, creative, and extremely flavorful wines.

History

From the historical town of Jera, in Tuscany, Italy, John Vicini brought with him the passion and love of wine that were handed from one generation to another for over 150 years. Now living and working with Cathy, his wife, and David, their son, they bring to you exceptional wines from the gently rolling vineyard covered hills of Sonoma County, the Russian River, and the Dry Creek Valley. Starting in 1994, John and Cathy grew and sold their own premium Russian River grapes. In 1999 they expanded their family's business to developing and introducing their own label Trecini, representing the three Vicini's (John, Cathy, and David).

With the help of David, Trecini has grown from a premium grape grower to a premium wine company offering five award winning varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, Merlot Rosé, and a Zinfandel.

The Team

John Vicini
Proprietor, Wine Making

John's fondest memory is at age 6, walking with his grandfather through the plush fields of vines in Tuscany, Italy, as he listened to the story about how the grapes were grown and how to take care of them. He grew up watching the village men make wine and listened to the stories on Sunday in the plaza about who could make wine better than the other. Everyone had their own secret method. John learned early on that the method used was the secret to making a wine distinctive from the other wines. He brought this secret with him to the United Sates when he came here at age 29. After 27 years as a proprietor of one of the finest Italian restaurants in Santa Rosa, California, John retired and was finally able to start his own vineyard, and begin his dream to make his own wine with his wife Cathleen, and their son David.

Cathy Vicini
Proprietor, Operations/Sales Manager

Cathy grew up making ‘club houses’ inside the old big huge wood barrels in the old Fountain Grove Winery. Her father would make the opening on the side larger so she could go in and out of it with chairs and tables. She can still remember the deep rich aromas left in the old barrels.

Cathy began her professional business career by establishing a chain of retail stores, then years later followed her passion into the world of counseling psychology, earning a doctorate, and after 20 years still maintains her counseling practice.

In addition, Cathy is the Co-Proprietor and Operations/Sales Manager at the family winery during the day. Never content to run a business she didn’t understand, Cathy attended the wine program at the CIA in Greystone to learn about wine making and the nuances of the various wines. It has been her goal to understand what goes into winemaking, and learn the subtleness in the various wines.

David M. Vicini
Proprietor, Business and Socializing

David is our all around guy. Pretty much anything we think of or have to do, he does. Good times. All in all, he's just happy to be here. From web design, tastings, shows, managing sales, etc.. etc... he is involved with it all. If you see him don't be afraid and say hello, its his job to be nice to everyone and engage in all forms of communication. He may even offer you a glass of one of the award winning wines from Trecini Winery.

Practices & Techniques

At Trecini, we farm Vicini Vineyards in accordance with “The Code of Sustainable Wine Growing Practices”. It is built on the idea that Environmentally Sound Practices, Economic Feasibility, and being Socially Equitable are not mutually exclusive. It is a voluntary self-assessment tool for vintners on how to conserve natural resources for the vineyards and local ecosystem, protect the overall environment, and work with the local community to improve the health and overall awareness of the environment. By following the code and developing a sustainable vineyard, the tangible benefits are: long-term viability of the land, improved wine quality, improved California wine market, conservation of natural resources, improved farm health and well-being, relationship with winery employees, and neighbors, and the development of a set of practices that can help the environment and the wine business.

From a viticultural perspective, the vine canopy is maintained to promote maximum grape quality and minimum disease pressure. This results in reduced use of fungicides and chemicals. The chemicals applied to Vicini Vineyard are all certified organic materials through bloom. At bloom we do not use non-organic materials, but they are low toxicity, lower than sulfur, which is a certified organic material. One reason our vineyard management team switched to the non-organic materials is because they last longer in the vineyard. One of the principles of sustainable farming is to make minimum tractor passes through the vineyard. Tractors produce carbon emissions, but they also compact the soil. Soil health is the number one issue in long term agricultural sustainability, which is why John and the vineyard management team use soil composts. By monitoring the mildew index and using advanced equipment and long lasting, low toxicity materials, our vineyard managers limit abrasive spraying which helps the environment and our vines.
