Winemaker

No amount of schooling can compare with hands-on experience and Matt Moersch has had his two hands in the family business since birth! Having grown up on the vineyard, Matthew began his winemaking career path while picking grapes as a young boy with his brother Christian. They could be found running between the vines, playing hide-and-seek until the sun went down in Southwest Michigan's vineyards.

Matthew became Round Barn Winery's winemaker and distiller in 2003, learning from his father Richard Moersch, who founded the winery in 1992 and has worked as a winemaker in the area for over 25 years. After apprenticing with his father, Matthew sharpened his winemaking and distilling skills during extensive travels in France, Germany, Hungary and California. Matthew's European training spanned the Burgundy, Alsace, and Champagne regions of France, the Rhein region of Germany as well as touring and tasting throughout Hungary's Tokay Region.

History

Originally built in 1911 our Round Barn was known as the Brucker Barn when we purchased it in 1997 from Rochester, Indiana. Looking for a unique building to house our distillery operation we found our barn in need of a new roof and about two weeks from being burned to the ground due to safety concerns. A DiVine intervention ensued and the rest as they say is history. Words cannot do justice to the task of moving the round barn to our property so we will let the photos do the rest of the talking. A special thanks to Ann Brucker and family for sending us the photos of the barn in its previous life.

Practices & Techniques

Day One (fall)
Picking:

You will be picking your grapes the same way winemakers have been harvesting their crops for centuries...by hand. The style of grapes that you will be picking all depends on Mother Nature and what is ripe at the time of your event. Please bring gloves and a strong back!

Crushing/Destemming:

Next, you will dump your grapes into a crushing/destemming machine, which as the name states will remove the stems and crack open the grapes, allowing the juice to flow.

The Red Experience day one ends here as we pump the must into open top bins, pitch the yeast and allow the juice/wine contact with the skins to extract color and tannin. At this point you will make the decision to add oak if you desire.

Day Two (spring)
Adjusting your wine:

On bottling day you will have the opportunity to taste your wine and adjust the sweetness to your desired level. Creating your own blend is one of the most exciting moments of the winemaking process!

Bottling:

After running your bottles through a sterilizing solution, you will use one of our siphon fillers to fill them. After filling is complete you will cork and capsule your wine, finishing with at least 24 bottles. We will send you home with plenty of blank labels so you can design them yourself.
