Winemaker

Barry Switzer is a former head football coach, most notably known for his career at the University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys. He was active in the college and professional ranks between 1960 and 1997, and has one of the highest winning percentages of any college football coach in the history of the game. He is one of only three head coaches to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl. Switzer quickly made a name for himself by perfecting the wishbone offense and developing it into the most prolific rushing offense in college football history. Switzer led the Sooners to two consecutive undefeated seasons and National Championships in 1974 and 1975, and then a third National Championship in 1985. The team won or shared twelve Big Eight Conference championships from 1973 to 1988. Switzer began coaching the Dallas Cowboys in 1994 and won Super Bowl XXX in his second season. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and received the Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award. In the 40s and 50s, Switzer had a humble upbringing in the rural south of Crossett, Arkansas. His daddy was a bootlegger and his mother was a wellread lover of literature. His unique upbringing taught him to appreciate ethnic diversity, hard work, discipline, and the arts. As a coach, he paved the way for many African American athletes by giving them an equal opportunity to prove themselves on the gridiron. He is considered one of the greatest recruiters in college football history because of his love of people and unique ability to communicate with people from all walks of life. Switzer credits his childhood for his entrepreneurial sprit, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence, all of which have become his trademark on and off the field.

History

Switzer Family Vineyards was established February 10, 2010, out of a mutual family adoration for fine wine. Our Vintage 2007 was produced a year later.

Coach Switzer developed his wine palate in the 1990s when coaching for wine connoisseur and Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones. “Jerry wouldn’t order anything but the best,” Switzer said.

“It didn’t take long to develop a better palate for the fine wine.”
