Winemaker

Ruud Maasdam - founder / winemaker:

With a love of wine, Ruud nurtured a dream of owning his own vineyard and creating wines that could take on the world, well before he ever decided to head for New Zealand. With his aim for perfection he sought land that could offer something a little different – a locale that would allow him the opportunity to fulfil his dream of making individualistic wines. His attention to detail is renowned in winemaking circles – especially his desire to understand his vineyard and the composition of every metre of it.

At the helm of Staete Landt he is very much hands on. He makes the wines and promotes not only his own brand but also the Marlborough wine growing region.

Ruud is a member of the Wine Marlborough Board and holds a position on the marketing committee of New Zealand Winegrowers.

History

Staete Landt Estate is set in the Golden Triangle of Rapaura. This is arguably the oldest and most established appallation of Marlborough, as within this triangle are some of the vineyards of the founders that took Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the world.

Historically the area was covered in trees and bush, an abundant hunting ground for the native people of Marlborough. The land had only been farmed for 70 years, prior to our buying it, in 1997. By that stage it was home to hundreds of apple and cherry trees.

The old riverbed gravels of the Wairau which form the soils in this part of Marlborough have proven to be excellent for grapegroing. Warm, free draining soils, riverstones and riverdeposits form the ideal base for the unique flavours of this terroir

The Team

Natasha McLauchlan - accounting & logistics manager:

Natasha joined the team in January 2015, after moving to Marlborough from the heart of the Waikato. With a Bachelor of Business Studies Degree with majors in both Management and Accounting, Natasha has a strong background in business and dairy farm accountancy since 2007. She is enjoying learning about the wine industry and has adapted greatly to the role and is becoming a great asset to the team.

With her background being accounting based Natasha believes that the logistical area of this role with Staete Landt Vineyard will be a new challenge for her and believes that she will thrive in the role.

Pickers:

Where would we be without them? All the pickers who came from afar to help us at harvest time, early mornings, sticky hands, aching backs.

Running through the rows of vines, filling up bins, collecting full bins, not stopping for lunch until we’ve finished....

Thank you to all of you young ladies and men from France, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Holland, Canada, USA, UK, Australia, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, Sweden, Chile, Portugal, South Africa, Ireland, Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary.....watch this space!

Practices & Techniques

Staete Landt is quite unique in its approach of producing single vineyard estate grown wines only. The wines are based on the soil profiles of the 24 different parcels of land within the estate. In reality we have 24 single vineyards, each one providing the eventual wine with a distinct flavour and textural component.

Retaining the individuality of each of these parcels within our estate is vital to our viticultural practises. We know that taking one little step in the vineyard may not make a huge difference to the ensuing wine – but when you undertake a lot of little steps the results are momentous.

Hence we have 17 separate irrigation blocks and we deal with the different ripening characteristics with careful individual canopy management practises. We undertake strict pruning regimes and bunch thin regularly during the summer months to ensure the smaller yields ripen to perfection.

All bar one block of Sauvignon Blanc is hand harvested at Staete Landt. We always pick first thing in the morning, when it is cool and before the heat of the day burns off the intense flavours our wines are renowned for.

Just as we treat each parcel individually in the vineyard, so too do we hand pick each parcel, allowing the winemaking team the opportunity to differentiate between the varying flavour components.

We take the handpicking process one stage further with rigorous hand selection which guarantees only the very best fruit makes it to the winery.
