History
The building was designed by Joseph Radotinsky, a noted architect in the Kansas City and western Kansas areas. Radotinsky designed several well known buildings, and served as the State Architect for the state of Kansas.
From the 1950’s through the early 1980’s the building housed Lakeview Elementary School. After the school closed its doors in the early eighties, the building was purchased by a local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, (VFW) and used as the VFW meeting hall. An Atchison couple purchased the building from the VFW in the mid-1990’s and it was used as a consignment and antique shop.
In 2005, David and Ginah purchased the building for conversion into Riverwood Winery.
Practices & Techniques
We handcraft our wines in small batches so that we can assure the best quality possible. Our wines are fermented, barreled, aged, blended and bottled either at our tasting room. We use oak barrels made in Missouri for our barrel aged wines -- Missouri wine aged in Missouri oak. T
Estate Vineyards / AVA
As we began to clear the ground in preparation for mowing we discovered trellis wires. We then spent two winters rolling up wires, which we had to do before we could mow. Finally we rolled up all the wires and were able to mow. That spring, grape vines began to sprout up all in a row! We decided at that time that we should try to renovate those vineyards. We spent years working on those grapes but ultimately plowed under all but the hardy native Norton/Cynthiana. Those decades old Cynthiana/Norton vines continue to produce for us!
Cayuga White GrapesIn the Spring of 2008 we planted an acre of Foche (a red variety) and an acre of Cayuga White in an area in front of our house at the farm. Those vines should begin to produce grapes for wine production in the 2011 or 2012 seasons.
In the spring of 2011 we planted an acre of Frontenac (a hearty red variety) and an acre of Traminette (a white variety). In the spring of 2012 we planted an acre of Vidal Blanc (a white grape) and an acre of St. Vincent (a red variety). We now have a total of seven acres of grapes which should keep us busy for a while!
In the Spring of 2006, we planted Cayuga White and Concord grape varieties in a demonstration plot in front of the Winery location along Highway 45. When you visit the Winery you can Vines in front of the Winerywander through the vines to see how the grapes grow. If the grapes are ripe you can see how they taste! We don't use sprays on the grapes so you have no worries. In the Spring of 2013 we decided to remove the Concords and Cayuga White and replace them with Nortons, the Missouri State Grape! The new vines are just starting to reach toward the tops of the grow tubes and should be producing grapes in a couple of years.
