Winemaker

A man of many interests, David Scheidt runs the entire winemaking process at Mastro Scheidt – from vine to bottle. It is his desire (and his palate) that guides the portfolio.

His career in the corporate and institutional finance sector has lasted more than 20 years. He has been published in financial journals and has taught at the American Management Association and UC Extension. He is a recognized speaker throughout the country on investment topics.

As a chef and food aficionado, he has been published in ThePuglia.com and has been a featured blogger on Urbanspoon and Noms.in. David was quoted in the September 1, 2011 edition of the Wall Street Journal regarding San Francisco restaurants. As a global traveler, he always finds time to cook with locals and pick up what he can in the kitchen. As for a favorite dish, it has to be pasta; with so many possibilities, who doesn't love pasta?

He is a talented amateur photographer, shooting many of the photos featured here on MastroScheidt.com.

He is a seasoned high-altitude mountaineer and climber. Together, John and David have explored The Wild West. From the High Desert in the great American Southwest to the highest peaks in California, Colorado, and Wyoming. His favorite climb? The Eiger in Switzerland (yes like the movie with Clint Eastwood).

History

Founded by David Scheidt in 2007, the winery is named for his ancestors – the Mastrogiacomos, shortened to Mastro at Ellis Island, on his mother’s side, who immigrated to Fresno from Southern Italy in the early 1900s, and the Scheidts on his father’s, Prussians who arrived around the same time from the Volga River valley. David’s family instilled a deep and abiding love of cooking and wine from a very early age.

The Team

John Scheidt:

David’s brother John is an accomplished cook and major contributor to the vineyard and varietal selection process at Mastro Scheidt Cellars. John has always been good at helping his brother work through the creative process and has been influential in the story and inspiration of Mastro Scheidt Cellars.

T.L. Scheidt:

David’s father Tom or T.L., grew up in Sanger, CA and has a rural industriousness. An electrician by trade, T.L. is a self-taught carpenter, mechanic, welder, dry-waller, gardener, plumber, concrete and soil specialist, and stained glass designer. T.L. refuses to retire and designs wine storage furniture from old oak barrels and custom BBQ’s in the backyard workshop he built.

Marco Mastro:

Cousin Marco's designs are seen throughout the Mastro Scheidt brand, from wine label design to the proprietor's mark. His most continuous art project is his home, situated in the historic Tower District of Fresno where he resides with his family. In 1997, Marco began his formal career as a graphic designer for the produce packaging industry.

Judy Mastro Scheidt:

David’s mom Judy doesn’t like the spotlight. Suffice it to say she inspired David’s love of good food and wine, and continues to enjoy it with her family.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Mill Creek Vineyard: Along the western slope of Dry Creek Valley, this hillside vineyard was planted in the mid-1980’s and has produced only Cabernet Sauvignon. It took 8 full years to establish the vines deep enough to see the potential of the vineyard, due to high density of rock just below the surface. Grapevines produce small, concentrated berries with a characteristic minerality. The soil is drip irrigated and sustainably farmed.

D.Rafanelli Vineyard: Along the western slope of Dry Creek Valley, the various hillside vineyards are planted to Clone 15 and 337 Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet blocks we consistently harvest from are The Terraces, steep hillside aspect and The Fronterra, at the very top of the Terrace Block, overlooking Dry Creek Valley. The vineyard is sustainably farmed.

Lencioni Vineyard: Along the eastern slope of Dry Creek Valley, a completely dry-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard has two blocks that we have consistently harvested fruit, 7th Vine and Main Block. The 7th Vine block is picked earlier than the Main Block, as the micro-climate is warmer and sunnier throughout the season than the remainder of the vineyard. Wild blackberry bushes grow sporadically throughout the entire vineyard block. The vineyard is 100% dry-farmed, with little to no intervention other than pruning and soil aeration.

Lake Block Vineyard: At the extreme northern end of Dry Creek Valley and adjacent to the Rockpile appellation, our Lake Block Sangiovese is nestled on a rare flat space among the rolling hills of this property. Well nourished soil and ample access to moisture, the Sangiovese ripens evenly throughout the sun-soaked days and cool nights. The soil is drip irrigated and farmed sustainably
