Love & Squalor Wine

About

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more exciting – Love & Squalor is introducing more flavors. Last Harvest we brought in some Pinot Gris from the Barnes Vineyard that we have been purchasing Pinot Noir from for some time. We also hooked up with a young vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills that has a block of Sauvignon Blanc – one of my all-time favorite varietals. The vines are young and bursting with intense fruit. Additionally there is a very special old-vine white project sitting in barrel that will likely only produce about 40 cases, so stay tuned for that. No new reds to introduce yet, but we are hunting for the right addition to our line-up.

Winemaker

Matt Berson, the winemaker/owner of Love & Squalor, began working in the Oregon wine industry in 2003, after his previous glorious career in the restaurant industry came to an end. He was taught the rudiments and joys of winemaking by Patty Green of Patricia Green Cellars. Additionally, he has scurried in the cellars of Jimi Brooks (Brooks), Jay Somers (J. Christopher), Larry McKenna (Escarpment, NZ), and Erni Loosen (Dr. Loosen).

History

Brooks Vineyard was first known as Eola Hills Vineyard and was planted by Don Byard starting in the early 1970’s to Pinot noir and in 1975/76 to Riesling. It is now farmed biodynamically by Brooks’ winemaker Chris Williams and managed by Bob Bailey.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Barnes Vineyard is farmed by Dan Kraemer and his family. He grows Pinot noir, Pinot gris and Riesling at this site in the Cascade foothills. It is not far from The Oregon Gardens and quaint Silverton, Oregon.

Cherry Grove Vineyard is owned and carefully cared for by Bob Van Steenburg, his wife and his daughter. They live at the converted wheat farm which they planted with the able assistance of manager Stirling Fox and his crew. In addition to the Pinot noir and a number of fruit and nut trees, there is a small steep block of Riesling planted by the previous owner.
