Winemaker

Rob Cameron:

Rob has one of New Zealand’s most diverse international winemaking backgrounds. After finishing his Viticulture and Oenology studies at Lincoln University, he had a few years in Marlborough and Auckland learning his craft. Then in 2003, Rob was appointed overall winemaker for Cellarworld Europe. Based in London, he oversaw the company’s wine growing projects throughout Europe. The role required extensive travel, often spending up to 40 weeks away from home each year, visiting clients on a cyclical basis to advise on their wine producing operations in Moldova, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Slovenia, France and Spain.

Amongst the challenges he confronted, Moldova was a real highlight. There was only water for 2-3 days each week, no power in the village after 6 pm and none every Tuesday and Thursday. Rob had ex KGB minders transporting him to and from work resplendent with their pistols and knives. Despite the constant difficulties, he thrived on the conditions and helped make some great wines.

History

Our first wine (Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc) was released in 2008. Since this time we’ve expanded the range to include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Sparkling, Riesling, and Chardonnay. In September 2010, we released a lower alcohol and fewer calories Sauvignon Blanc called "belle by Invivo" followed in 2012 by a New Zealand first, lower alcohol and fewer calories Rosé. In 2014 we released Scarlett's Spritzers, a refreshing 5% alcohol natural fruit infused sparkling drink.

"True Industry Innovators like Invivo wines have no respect for the status quo. They find better and novel ways of doing things. The team at Invivo wines is turning the wine industry on its head both with the quality and product categories they develop and their novel global marketing strategies and reach."

Innovator Sir Ray Avery GNZM, New Zealander of the Year 2010

The Team

Tim Lightbourne
Marketing & Director

From ketchup and hair colourants to Pinot Noir? Co-founder Tim Lightbourne looks after the marketing of Invivo. He qualified with a Bachelor’s degree from Massey University and post grad in marketing at Otago University. He has a background as a senior marketer with L'Oreal in the United Kingdom (where apparently he was trained to colour hair?!), Group Danone where he studied with Danone's Marketing University in Paris, Lyon and Istanbul. He worked on the international strategy with iconic sauce brands HP and Lea & Perrins, and has been employed as a consultant for HJ Heinz Co to develop the strategy to launch HP Foods in emerging markets. While based in Europe, Tim took some time out to work a vintage in Burgundy. Being a marketer, and his first vineyard role, he was reserved to the grape picking duties.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

The Marlborough region through its geology, geography and climate is one of the greatest areas in the world to grow aromatic wines. Its glacially formed valleys and alluvial river flats have created a discreet region separated by mountains.

This combined with long sunshine hours and maritime influences creates a unique combination of factors that produces incredible aromatics in white wines. The hot days and cool nights let grapes ripen while still retaining all the delicate aromatic flavours that are often lost in warmer climates.

Invivo's vineyard sites in the Dashwood and Awatere valley are blessed with their own unique microclimates and soil types. These sites are typically cool and have very long growing seasons allowing the whole spectrum of Sauvignon Blanc flavours to be captured and therefore giving Invivo its unique character. Invivo's sites in Marlborough are certified 100% sustainable.

Central Otago is a wine makers dream with its dramatic scenery, geology and fantastic continental climate of hot days cool nights and very low rainfall. Central Otago has so many sub-regions we are just discovering that suit Pinot Noir fantastically, these areas make wines of such diverse character that one can truly see the grape in all its alluring guises.

Invivo growers are all ultra passionate about Pinot Noir and all add important elements to the Invivo blend. Some vineyards produce amazingly soft textured wines while others provide the backbone in tannin structure. The diversity of each sub region, Gibbston Valley, Lowburn, Northburn, Bannockburn, Bendigo allow us to create a wine with what we feel best captures the grape and the region.
