Faustini Wines

About

Our focus is to create small lots of brilliant wines that individually, have their own story, pair well with a variety of foods and are enthusiastically enjoyed on their own. It seemed as if each bottle we opened with family or friends created a new memorable experience for us and they became stories. This linkage was one of the things we loved about wine, the appreciation of wine and the art of the story.

Winemaker

Marbue Marke is the winemaker for Faustini Wines. His extensive experience in the wine industry is taking Faustini's Wines to the next level. His cutting edge barrel fermentation program along with his knowledge of the barrel cooperage business, adds additional complexity to our program while maintaining our distinct style. Marbue continues to refine the quality of our wines and is the original winemaker for our limited production bottling of "1023".

Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa, Marbue moved to California in 1992 to live with his father. Drawing on joyful evenings he spent getting sips of French wine from his grandfather, Marbue decided to pursue the study of Enology at U.C. Davis.

During his 1997 harvest internship at J Wine Company (Jordan Sparkling Wine Company), Marbue fell in love with the teamwork and accomplishment of surviving harvest so much so that he decided to make winemaking a career. After graduating from U.C. Davis in 1998 with a B.S. in Fermentation Science, he started his career as an Enologist and Assistant Winemaker at Cosentino Winery in the Napa Valley and then proceeded to R.H. Phillips Winery as a Barrel Enologist. In 2001, Marbue settled in at Benziger Family Winery where the philosophy of “farming for flavors” and Vineyard designated focus resonated with him. As the Associate Winemaker/Facility Manager, he was responsible for White winemaking and managed the Sonoma County line Barrel and Production Facility. A self-described “student of wine” who believes in continuous improvement, he received his MBA in 2005 from Sonoma State University with a thesis on the Success Practices and Challenges of California Wineries in Exporting. During this time he was active in the California Enological Research Association, serving as Chairman of the Barrel Committee in 2003 and Chairman of the Bottling Committee in 2004.

Longing to experience a variety of winemaking environments, after his MBA Marbue moved to E. & J. Gallo Winery where he was the delicate varietals Program Winemaker (e.g. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio) and worked on special projects (including the inaugural Barefoot Cellars Pinot Grigio and inaugural Gallo Family Vineyards Moscato). After two successful seasons at Gallo, he decided to return to his true passion of pursuing ultra premium wines with a vineyard focus, which is exactly what we are all about at Faustini Wines.

We are lucky to have Marbue as our winemaker and can't wait to share the wines we produce under his consult with all of you.

History

It all began in early 2005 while residing on the East Coast. During this period, both Michelle and I had jobs at a high tech firm working in sales and engineering. While we both loved wine and collected some of the best produced wine we could find over the years, we sought after more ways to become involved in the process of making wine. It seemed as if each bottle we opened with family or friends created a new memorable experience for us and they became stories. This linkage was one of the things we loved about wine, the appreciation of wine and the art of the story.

We often enjoyed different varietals and styles of wines and the dream of creating our own began to flourish. In a drive to educate ourselves about the creation of wines we traveled to the West Coast . Our first goal was to learn as much as we could about viticulture and enology; Napa Valley held up to its reputation as being one of the best places in the world to accessibly discover the world of winemaking.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Beckstoffer Dr Crane Vineyard, St. Helena:

Beckstoffers vineyard was originally planted in 1858 by Napa Valley pioneer Dr. George Beldon Crane. The vineyard was entirely replanted in 1998 and is now hitting its stride. The vineyard has quickly become a star due to its high quality fruit. Due to higher temperatures, the Cabernet Sauvignon here tends to ripen earlier than its Oakville cousin (ToKalon) but is starting to show every bit as much potential. The vineyards well drained gravelly loam soils help create wines with a tremendous concentration of cassis and graphite that are intense in flavor, have soft tannins, and are very dark in color. This 25 acre historic vineyard property is located west of Route 29 in the City of St. Helena within the St. Helena AVA.

Faustini Wines is sourcing clone 337 from this vineyard and it was used to produce our first Cabernet Sauvignon in 2005.

Galleron Road Vineyard, Rutherford:

As in Bordeaux, sauvignon blanc tends to do extremely well where cabernet grows. The Rutherford AVA produces great cabernet sauvignon but we went to Galleron Road for the sauvignon blanc. This vineyard, located on Galleron Road in Rutherford, will be the source of our Sauvignon Blanc. Wines produced from this vineyard are crisp, with hints of citrus and minerality.

Howell Mountain:

The vineyard was planted in 1990 and spans 200 acres of mountainous terrain. The Howell Mountain region produces wines that are often richly tannic, with excellent acidity for aging. This is one of the most visually exciting vineyards. Much of the vineyard is beautifully terraced and it is all well-tended. The vineyard is planted to a quad trellis that produces about 2 to 2.5 tons per acre. This is also one of the more technologically advanced sites, using "stress modules" to determine ripening which enables you to do multiple picks during harvest to achieve optimal ripeness. The vineyards grapes go into some of the most sought after Bordeaux style blends being produced in California.

Faustini Wines will be producing its first Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard beginning in 2006.

Coombsville Vineyard, Napa Valley:

Coombsville offers a unique terroir for Bordeaux varietals in Napa Valley. This down-valley site is much cooler than most of Napa and has a dramatic rock-strewn southwest slope that provides the vines the sunlight they need to fully ripen. The climate of Coombsville naturally provides a longer hang-time resulting in profound color and flavor intensity in wines produced from this vineyard. This is a very high density vineyard with over 2000 vines per acre and has been planted entirely to clone 337. By choosing these clones, the vineyard moderates the higher tannin and herbal aromatics often found in cooler climate/hillside vineyards.

Faustini Wines will be producing its first Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard beginning in 2007.
