Ben Bunting

The Dedham Vale Estate is managed by Carters Vineyards Limited and run by a small team of people, headed by Ben and Tom Bunting. They share an enthusiasm for quality and taste and are committed to producing the finest still and sparkling wines. The Vineyard offers a highly personalised service to customers and visitors and they are justifiably proud of the reputation that has been created.

Wine maker Ben Bunting and son Tom are building on the early success of the vineyard, originally planted by International Wine Judge and renowned viticulturist, Mary Mudd. In the next 3 years, the plan is to double the acreage under cultivation.

Practices & Techniques

Essex has the ideal climate in this country for wine production due to its sunshine levels and low rainfall. Carter’s Vineyards were among the first in this country to be set up on the New Zealand, “Scott Henry” system of vine trellising. The science of capturing maximum heat and light for the production of ripe fruit is demonstrated at the vineyard.

In addition to producing wine from our own grapes, we also take in grapes from other vineyards in the region and produce wine from them in our winery.

Visitors to the vineyard have the opportunity to view the wine production process in our winery. Wine making is done in stainless steel vats, using modern equipment and French oak barriques are used to age some of the wines.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Carter’s Vineyards was originally established by Mary Mudd and. Mary’s connection with the vineyard continues, working alongside Ben and the team in developing ever more sophisticated sparkling and still wine.
