About

Balance is a time-honored goal in the making of premium wines and working toward balance is a way of life at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery. Founder Jim Wyse is committed to balance, well beyond that of the fine, world-class wines being produced. A kind of Hippocratic oath ("to do no harm") underlies the creative viticultural and enological practices at Burrowing Owl. The winery and vineyard lie within one of Canada's most unique ecosystems which includes the northernmost tip of the Sonora Desert. The location (on a southwest-tilting, sandy plateau) near the north end of Osoyoos Lake, is one of the most highly rated grape-growing locations in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, and for that matter Canada. In 1993, when Jim Wyse began to replant the vineyards which had been carefully selected for their ability to produce world class, premium quality grapes, the winery was not part of his long term vision. Having recognized the potential of this location, Jim was gratified to see wines made with his grapes gaining immediate recognition. Finally, the decision to build Burrowing Owl Estate Winery was confirmed and a winery license was obtained in 1997. Construction began in early1998 and completed just in time for that year's harvest. The site has since been enhanced with a beautiful fine-dining Restaurant and luxurious Guest House. The varied and deceptively fragile desert ecosystems within the adjoining vineyards continually challenge the environmentally sensitive team at Burrowing Owl. Alternative pest control systems are the standard. More than 100 bluebird boxes and two bat nurseries invite insect-eating guests to stay awhile and dine in the vineyards. Ground nests of meadowlarks are protected by barriers in springtime to prevent farm machinery and vineyard workers from inadvertently destroying them. Snakes are safely relocated. Bears and big horned sheep are discouraged from sharing the harvest but never harmed. Today, with its dramatic vantage point in the middle of the vineyard, Burrowing Owl Estate Winery is a winemaking facility that combines state-of-the-art technologies with proven, classic winemaking traditions. A gravity-flow system handles ripe grapes delicately, preserving their rich fruit character. Extensive underground cellaring capacity ensures that long term barrel aging is never limited by space. You can find Burrowing Owl wines at many fine restaurants and wine shops and of course, at the winery itself. And when you visit, be sure to bring your binoculars.

The Team

Jim Wyse - Founder & Proprietor

James (Jim) Wyse was born in 1938 in Toronto where he grew up. He studied Structural Engineering at U of T, and after a 4-year period of bridge building with Ontario Highways, went on to study business at the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Business School in London where he earned an MBA. After 2 years in Ottawa selling nuclear products internationally with Atomic Energy Canada Ltd, Jim and his family moved to Vancouver in 1968 where Jim worked as a business management consultant for 4 years. After a brief 18-month hiatus back in Ottawa managing a local ski area through a temporary crisis, Jim returned to Vancouver to start up his own development company in 1973. Over the next 25 years, Jim’s primary business was to re-develop inner city properties into condominiums throughout the lower mainland, Oklahoma City, Denver and Whistler.

While cleaning up one such development project in Vernon in 1993, Jim was introduced to some relatively inexpensive and abandoned vineyard land south of Oliver that was then being offered for sale. This property became the first 100 acres for Burrowing Owl Vineyards. Knowing relatively nothing about the grape and wine industry, Jim found good, experienced people to run the vineyard and eventually to make and market the wine. In his own words, his job was to monitor the costs, arrange the financing, write the cheques and make sure that all of this activity was making sense from a business point of view.

Jim Wyse was the first President of the Burrowing Owl group of companies, but his son Chris is now the winery President as Jim heads towards retirement. However Jim remains Chairman of the Board and will always be the “Founder” (an unofficial position).

On a personal note, Jim enjoys old-timers hockey and jazz piano, both of which he still plays with enthusiasm. Midge and Jim are still involved at the winery and surprisingly, their three children have been drawn into the wine industry as well. Following them there are four grand-children coming up through the ranks, and they will be generation number three… Jim hopes!

Chris Wyse - President

Chris Wyse joined the family business in 2006 and assumed the President’s role in 2007. As the oldest son of founders Jim and Midge Wyse, Chris came to the business with a well-informed understanding of the history that preceeded him and the challenges that face him. He also shares the family’s passion for excellence and their proficiency in generating it in others. Chris brings astute business skills to the company with a degree in entrepreneurial business management and a career in real estate that included development analysis and mortgage finance.

Chris always manages to find opportunity doing the things that he loves. His years abroad were spent working in the ski and photography industries and it was in this milieu that he developed a love of travel, good wines and an appreciation for the people who produce them. His management style evolves from his parents’ philosophy of focusing on people and a sustainable stewardship of the land. He embraces the traditional culture of winemaking with his sights set always on the support of technical innovation.

Practices & Techniques

Without compromising the grape or wine quality, every effort has been made by the Vineyard operators to ensure the sustained viability of the natural terrain and the plants and animals that live there. These measures include:

Upgrades to Irrigation Systems: A complete replacement of our 40-year old irrigation pumps and pipelines costing about $1.0 million was completed in 2007. Early reviews indicate that this upgrade has improved our irrigation energy efficiency by a factor of approximately 2, as it allows us to use much less water for growing wine grapes, something that the old system was not capable of. This is a huge improvement in efficiency and promotes water conservation with a parallel reduction in our consumption of electrical power.

Solar Energized Water Probes: Throughout the vineyard there are solar energized probes that automatically test the soil at root depth and wirelessly report the true watering needs of the vines back to the office. This ensures that we only use the water that we need.

Use of Bio-Diesel Fuel: We use bio-diesel fuel in the 6 tractors that operate the vineyard. These fuels are cleaner burning and emit fewer less greenhouse gases than equivalent fossil fuels.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a long way of saying that we try to use friendly insects to battle other insect pests. For example, spider habitat is boosted by simply not cutting the cover crops between the vine rows regularly. Instead, these rows are cut on alternating periods thus providing continuous habitat and encouraging a thriving spider population. In turn, spiders eat aphids and mites that are pests to the grapes.

Organic Techniques: A variety of techniques have been invoked to bring the vineyard closer to the “organic” ideal. One such technique is the recycling of grape “pomace”, the material made up of grape skins and seeds that are expelled from the press after the juices and wines are extracted. The pomace is taken to a local feedlot where it is mixed with manure and returned to the vineyard in the spring, as a compost to enhance the organic material in our sandy soils.

Sprays: Using environmentally safe, biodegradable fertilizers and chemicals, none of which persist in the soils. Long term sustainability of this beautiful farmland is our principal objective.

Cover crops: Planting cover crops of mustard between each row of grape vines, which encourages the growth of preferred invertebrates and supports a natural mechanism of pest control. Interestingly, the cover crop also reduces the evaporation rate of irrigation water and puts essential nitrogen into the soil.

Compost: Mulching all organic waste generated during pruning and vine maintenance and leaving it on the ground to compost naturally among the vines adds organic matter to the vineyard topsoil.

Snakes: Helping to relocate the endangered western rattlesnakes and other creatures that are occasionally found in the vineyard, without harming them.

Birds: If the nests of birds like meadowlarks that nest on the ground are spotted in the vineyard, the tractor drivers are instructed to rope off these rows until the new chicks have fledged.

Education and training: Sensitizing and educating vineyard workers and visitors to the area’s unique ecological features is on ongoing program.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Many of the world's finest wine grapes come from the sunny, dry hills of mid-northern latitudes (42º - 50º) - - the great vineyards of France, Germany, northern Italy, Spain, Washington and Oregon. So it's no surprise that wine experts are turning their attention to BC's Okanagan Valley, which is in the same latitude and now the Okanagan is producing truly outstanding wines. Burrowing Owl's vineyards are located in prime position on the eastern side of the Okanagan Valley between Osoyoos and Oliver, BC. Grapes from these vineyards have already attracted international acclaim.

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery has been awarded numerous awards for all Burrowing Owl wines produced. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery produced its first vintage in 1997, concentrating on four grape varieties from the 16 varieties grown at Burrowing Owl Vineyards - - Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for red wines; Chardonnay and Pinot Gris for white. Cabernet Franc was added in 1998, Pinot Noir in 1999 and Syrah in 2000. The winery currently produces about 35,000 cases of wine. Location and premium grape varieties are two of the vineyards' greatest assets.

The winery owns and manages all of the vineyard land growing grapes for the Burrowing Owl wines. The land base consists of 170 acres of producing vineyards on 180 acres of land, split between three vineyard sites. The original 140 acre site which contains an equal amount of red and white grapes is located on Black Sage road at the winery. There is a 30 acre vineyard located on the East slopes above Osoyoos Lake growing Bordeaux varieties and Syrah reds, and a 10 acre vineyard growing Sauvignon Blanc located in the Similkameen Valley.

Still, it takes special skills to turn these assets into fine wines. Our vineyard managers contribute a wealth of knowledge and experience that is unsurpassed in the valley. Their dedicated team takes special pride in the success of these vineyards. And of course, they work closely with the winemaking team at Burrowing Owl to co-ordinate crop levels, ripeness targets, and the many other parameters necessary to produce only the finest quality wines.
