History

The 38 acres of land that was granted to the Alexander Family, from William Penn, started the history of Brookmere. James Alexander built the southern mansion type farm house is 1866 for his wedding present to his bride. James’s daughter Jane, married Reverend Leffard Haughwout, who lived in the mansion for only a short while. A number of tenants who kept up the farming around the 1866 bank barn, located next to the mansion, also lived in half of the house. The house was eventually acquired by Charles Rodarmor and his 3 children from his wife Virginia Haughwout Rodarmor, who was a descendant of the Alexander family. The property stayed in the family until 1974 when Donald and Susan Chapman started renovations. In 1981 Don planted 3 acres of grapes and started the process of converting the barn into a sales room and wine making facility. In 1983 Brookmere Winery was open for business.

After 23 successful years in business, Don and Susan sold the business to Ed and Cheryl Glick. Cheryl was an employee for the Chapman’s for 12 years prior to purchasing the business with her husband Ed, who was a former dairy farmer for 18 years. When a business opportunity arose, they decided to take a new adventure. Ed learned the wine making trade as he worked for the Chapman’s. After 7 years, the Glick’s purchased the winery and the business expanded in many directions. After a year of renovations, the 1866 mansion is now a warm and cozy bed and breakfast and a one of a kind event space. Making Brookmere the first Pennsylvania winery with a B&B. The picturesque piece of land next to the vineyard is now a highly sought after place to hold weddings and receptions. A pavilion, nestled between the mansion and the vineyard was built to accommodate all kinds of special events.

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Our ten acres of vineyard provide Brookmere Winery with approximately 40% of our grape required for annual production. Additional grapes and fruit are all purchased from PA Grape and Fruit Growers.
