Bodegas Martinez Corta

About

Bodegas Martínez Corta is a family estate situated in the heart of Rioja Alta and was born out of four generations of viticulturalism. Since the 1960s Martinez Corta has consistently been the most important wine estate in Uruñuela, producing equality wines in a medieval cellar that has remained an important part of the estate since its conception. The estate includes 225 acres of old-vine Tempranillo located in Uruñuela, Cenicero and San Asensio, and all are at least 40 years old and head-pruned. Vineyard parcels are typically planted on high slopes deficient in organic materials, so that the wines can maintain a certain elegance and minerality. A new gravity-flow bodega was completed in 2006 to produce fully extracted, fruit-driven wines that express the complexity and velvet palate of the noble Tempranillo variety. This is a notable and important characteristic of Martínez Corta that contributes to their remarkable production of high quality wines.

History

Bodegas Martínez Corta decided 50 years ago to pursue art of making quality wines in La Rioja. Our grandfather, now deceased, and his four children (one of them our father) during the decades 60 and 70, was the largest producer in town with 150,000 liters of wine. Remember and give credit to the fact that in those days the work of the vineyard's were performed manually and with cattle by the farmers themselves (known today as winegrowers).

Estate Vineyards / AVA

Martinez Corta vineyards have a high heterogeneity, from new plantations 10 years old, its centuries - old vineyards. Old slopes located in the upper area of Uruñuela bordering at lower areas along the banks of the river Najerilla with the towns of San Asensio and Torremontalbo. It is an area privileged by the microclimate that is created from the freshness of the North, with winds from the Sierra Cantabria.

The Mediterranean climate is reflected in the humidity generated by the Ebro river, contributing to the vineyards unique nuances, which combined with topographic factors and special weather conditions create mild winters and warm, dry summers, scoring high in temperature between day and night at the time of ripening.

The vineyards of this area have southern and southwestern sun exposure which helps add a different character to our wines.

The soils are mostly clay - calcareous and poor in organic matter. All varieties grown are indigenous, dominated by Tempranillo. This varietal is best suited to our climate and altitude (520 m approx). A high proportion of limestone and abundance of boulders, gravel and many remains of alluvial provide high drainage allowing the wines to furnish multiple complex mineral flavors.

The Martinez Corta vineyards are descended from a family in their 4th generation. The vineyard cultivation has remained unchanged by the family since their great - grandfather, Felix Martinez. He has managed to instill in his children the wisdom and experience of more than 30 years.
