Dave and Sandee Dickson moved to the Napa Valley in the early 1970’s and began producing wines at an underground winery-cottage they purchased in the eastern foothills above the town of St. Helena. It was here they built a family and a reputation as exceptional home winemakers. At the time, the Winery showcased a frog & toad on the label and produced wines from whatever came its way - often trading winemaking services for grape varieties including Napa Gamay Beaujolais, French Columbard, Carignane, Petaserra. These lesser known varieties soon graduated to Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Dave won a string of awards in the 1970’s and early 80’s at the Napa Valley Home Winemakers Classic culminating in a "Best of Show" award in 1983 at the Napa Town & Country Fair.

In 2002, Dave and Sandee’s eldest son, Andrew Dickson, revived the Andrew Lane label with a throw back whole- cluster fermented Napa Gamay Beaujolais and was featured in the Wall Street Journal, Napa Valley Wine Library Association, Food & Wine, Culinary Trends and Gourmet Magazine.

With several successful vintages under its belt, Andrew Lane Winery began partnering with long-time friends and growers in Napa Valley, and the first commercially available Cabernet Sauvignon was released in 2004. Today we are honored to source Cabernet and Merlot grapes from Rutherford, St. Helena, East Oakville and Howell Mountain.

Since the beginning, the Dickson family has treated harvest as an event to be shared by family and neighbors - with children leaping into grape pumace and bathing in 5 gallon buckets, while parents worked the crusher and press. Our label further honors this tradition by showcasing the old basket press our father traded for a mickey munoz surfboard.

Practices & Techniques

Since the 1970's Andrew Lane Winery has showcased whole cluster fermentation, a primative winemaking technique that involves very little mechanization. Whole grape clusters are plucked fresh from the vine just as the sun rises and fermented whole creating a fresh-fruit style variety with explosive aromatics.

Our first white wine Sandee and Dave earned "Best of Show" in the local newspaper circa 1983.
