In and of itself Sonoma Wine Country consists of a total of 16 individual appellate counties which produce wine grapes, including the Dry Creek Valley and the Russian River Valley.
Because of the diversity of the land over which Sonoma County covers, including the coastline and valleys, making it ideal for the planting and growing a wide variety of wine grapes. While the county itself was established in 1850, the first known grapes were planted there in 1812.
