Modern North Carolina Vineyards

North Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the nation. From subtropical forests to ocean front views, the state is beyond amazing. What many people may not realize, however, is that the state enjoys a rich wine culture and has a history with the fruit dating back to the mid 1550s. It wasn’t until 1835 that the first North Carolina wineries were produced, but since that time the industry has flourished dramatically.

Modern North Carolina Vineyards

Although North Carolina’s wine production history reaches back hundreds of years, it took until 2003 for the state to enjoy its first recognition by the American Viticultural Association when the northwestern region was put on the map. Since then, wineries in North Carolina have reaped serious benefits. In fact, today there are over 48 unique wine producers throughout the state with over 100 wineries. This is incredible considering the amount of land available for vineyards, and makes North Carolina the nation’s 7th greatest wine producer in the country.

Types of North Carolina Wine

North Carolina wineries tend to focus on two distinct grape varieties, muscadine and vinifera grapes. However, there are plenty of other types cultivated in state, only in a lesser amount.  The most popular types of North Carolina wine include reds like Cabernets and sweet whites like Rieslings. With so many different types of grapes used, there really is no limit as to what North Carolina vineyards can and do produce.
