Monterey Wine Tasting

A trip to California means having access to some of the best wines and wineries in the US, which is why the state has become such a popular destination among wine lovers. There are vineyards spread all across California, making it tough to settle on just one particular region when taking a wine journey. All of the major regions are great, but one that gets a lot of the headlines from the wine community is Monterey County. Not only is this part of the state among the largest wine producers in California, it is also routinely recognized as being among the best wine travel destinations in the country.

What makes Monterey wine tasting so different from other regions is the sheer number of different wine varietals produced there. The more than 80 wineries in the county draw from over 40,000 acres of grapes to deliver 42 different wine varietals. As you might have already guessed, that makes the wine tasting in this part of the country something truly special. You will be able to sample wines here that you just can’t get anywhere else, and people traveling in groups will be assured that there will be a wine available to suit the tastes of everyone.

The reason that so many different types of grapes are able to be grown here has much to do with Monterey Bay, which is known as the Blue Grand Canyon. The waters of the bay are cold and deep, and they bring in fog and moderate temperatures that create ideal conditions for grape growers. It also helps create a number of unique climates throughout the region, which is why a visit to each of the 8 AVA’s there means a different experience each time. Again, you can begin to see why Monterey wine tasting is a trip that wine lovers feel the need to take.

The different characteristics of each of the distinct regions started to be noticed in the 1960’s, which was when wine production in Monterey County went into high gear. Part of the fun of visiting each of the different AVA’s in the county is getting to see the differences in the wines that are produced there. With a little bit of practice, you might even be able to tell which particular AVA within the Monterey region that a specific wine comes from. Of course, you could also just relax and enjoy all that this beautiful area has to offer.

Something else that makes Monterey County wine country so much fun to visit is the sheer number of events that take place there throughout the year. This is a part of the state that loves wine, and they love to celebrate the industry that has helped put them on the map. It seems as though there is always something going on here, particularly on the weekends when the wineries will also get in on the fund and provide special treats for their guests. If you have been thinking about a trip to California, might we suggest that you consider adding Monterey wine tasting to your itinerary?
